My Mother’s Great-Uncle Never Remarried.

Young couple photographed in about 1910.

I found one person in our family tree who had succumbed to the pandemic 99 years before this one. Patrick (Pattie) Henry Morgan Norman died on January 2, 1919. She fell ill with “the new strain” of influenza after taking Christmas baskets to soldiers passing through on the train- six days earlier. She was 31 years old, and her husband, my mother’s great-uncle, never remarried.

Newspapers.com is a fantastic resource for social history. The American Red Cross often brought food to soldiers passing through small towns.
American Red Cross volunteer about 1918, later died of the influenza pandemic.
